About Burj Khalifa

The Burj Khalifa is a megatall mixed-use skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and developed by Emaar Properties, which stands as the tallest building in the world at 828 meters.

Overview and Architecture

Standing at a record-breaking height of 828 meters (2,717 feet) with 163 floors above ground, the Burj Khalifa is a masterpiece of modern engineering. Designed by Adrian Smith and the architecture firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the tower's neo-futurism style features a tripartite Y-shaped floor plan inspired by the Hymenocallis (spider lily) desert flower. This shape plays a central role in optimizing residential and hotel views of the Arabian Gulf while structurally reducing wind forces on the tower.

Mixed-Use Vertically Layered Program

The interior of the Burj Khalifa is carefully segmented into distinct levels. The lower levels (Concourse to Level 8, and Levels 38-39) house the ultra-luxury Armani Hotel Dubai with 160 rooms. Levels 9 to 16 contain the 144 Armani Residences. Private residential apartments occupy levels 19 to 108, featuring 900 studio, 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-bedroom apartments. The upper sections of the building are dedicated to Corporate Suites (offices), high-altitude restaurants like At.mosphere on Level 122, and world-record observation decks such as At The Top on Levels 124 and 125, and At The Top SKY on Level 148.

Construction and Engineering

Developed by Emaar Properties, construction on the Burj Khalifa began on January 6, 2004, and the exterior cladding was completed on October 1, 2009. The building was officially inaugurated on January 4, 2010. The construction process was executed by a joint venture of Samsung C&T, BESIX, and Arabtec, utilizing over 22 million man-hours and approximately 330,000 cubic meters of concrete. The tower is supported by a massive 3.7-meter-thick reinforced concrete mat foundation sitting on 194 bored piles extending nearly 50 meters deep. The exterior is clad in over 26,000 hand-cut reflective glass panels, designed to withstand the harsh desert climate of Dubai.
