About Palm Jumeirah
Palm Jumeirah is a world-renowned artificial island and master-planned coastal development shaped like a palm tree off the coast of Dubai, UAE.
Background and Master Development
Launched in 2001 and master-developed by Nakheel, Palm Jumeirah is one of the world's largest man-made islands. It spans 560 hectares of reclaimed land, extending 5 kilometers into the Arabian Gulf. Built entirely from approximately 94 million cubic metres of dredged sea sand and 7 million tons of rock from the Hajar Mountains, the island was designed to solve Dubai's shortage of beachfront land, successfully adding 56 kilometers of shoreline to the city.
Layout and Zones
The island's layout consists of three primary zones: a two-kilometer-long trunk that serves as a high-density mixed-use residential and commercial hub; a crown featuring 17 fronds developed as exclusive, low-density gated villa communities with private beach access; and a surrounding 11-kilometer crescent breakwater that protects the inner sectors and hosts ultra-luxury resorts like Atlantis, The Palm.
Infrastructure and Redevelopment
Palm Jumeirah is linked to the mainland by a central bridge, and a sub-sea vehicular tunnel connects the spine to the crescent. It features the Palm Monorail, a 5.5-kilometer elevated driverless transit system that resumed operations in early July 2026 after a six-month suspension for maintenance. In mid-2024, the waterfront dining destination 'The Pointe' was closed to be redeveloped into 'The Palm Crown', which will consist of 38 high-end beachfront villas.
