About Bluewaters Island
Bluewaters Island is a premium, man-made multi-billion dollar mixed-use island destination developed by Meraas off the coast of Jumeirah Beach Residence in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
History and Development
Approved by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Bluewaters Island was officially launched on February 13, 2013. The land reclamation and dredging process was carried out by Dutch contractor Van Oord on behalf of developer Meraas. Construction began on May 20, 2013, and the island officially opened to the public in November 2018 with a total estimated construction cost of AED 6 billion ($1.6 billion USD).
Residential and Off-Plan Infrastructure
The completed residential component on the island, known as Bluewaters Residences, consists of 10 glass-fronted mid-rise towers (varying from 5 to 17 storeys). This development comprises 698 premium apartments ranging from one to four bedrooms, 4 ultra-luxury penthouses, and 17 townhouses located on the podium level. A newer off-plan residential development, Bluewaters Bay, consists of two towers under construction by Meraas, with completion scheduled for mid-2027.
Hospitality and Tourism Highlights
The island is home to premier hospitality and leisure attractions. It features two world-class luxury hotels: Banyan Tree Dubai (which officially rebranded from Caesars Palace Dubai in November 2023, offering 179 keys and 96 private residences) and Delano Dubai (formerly Caesars Resort Dubai, which opened in October 2024 with 251 guest rooms). The island's signature landmark is Ain Dubai (formerly Dubai-I), which stands at 250 metres as the world's tallest and largest observation wheel, though it has been closed for long-term renovations. Other attractions include Madame Tussauds Dubai and a waterfront retail promenade hosting more than 150 outlets.
Access and Connectivity
Though situated offshore, Bluewaters Island offers seamless connectivity. It is linked to Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) via a dedicated road bridge. For pedestrians, a scenic footbridge (The Wharf Link) connects the island directly to JBR Beach. The island's public transportation options include the F57 feeder bus from Jebel Ali Metro Station, RTA water taxis, and a Group Rapid Transit (GRT) driverless pod system.
