About Meydan One
Meydan One is an ambitious, mixed-use master-planned community in Mohammed Bin Rashid City, Dubai, designed to integrate massive residential clusters, luxury retail, and record-breaking leisure attractions along an extension of the Dubai Water Canal.
Master Plan and Key Subcommunities
Spanning a total area of between 3.67 and 5 million square metres, Meydan One (officially known as Al Merkadh) is envisioned as a premier urban district. The master plan, designed by architectural consultant AE7, is planned to house over 78,000 residents across approximately 27,800 residential units. It integrates low-density luxury villa subcommunities such as District One (developed via Meydan Sobha) and dense mid-rise residential sectors like the French-Mediterranean-inspired Azizi Riviera.
Leisure, Attractions, and World Records
The initial launch of Meydan One featured five proposed world-record-breaking developments: the world's tallest residential building (the 711-metre Dubai One Tower), the longest indoor ski slope (1.2 kilometres), the largest dancing water fountain, the highest 360-degree observation deck, and the highest restaurant. The community also features a 4-kilometre navigable water canal, a 9-kilometre boardwalk, and a 25,000 square metre indoor gymnasium.
Current Status and Delayed Retail Infrastructure
The central commercial anchor of the district, the Meydan One Mall, was designed to feature a retractable roof, a hypermarket, over 550 retail outlets, and extensive entertainment facilities. While construction commenced in 2017 with Italian contractor Salini Impregilo, the mall's launch has faced multiple delays. By 2026, the retail project and its mega-tower have been widely reported as indefinitely paused or undergoing strategic re-scoping following the incorporation of Meydan Group into Dubai Holding.
